What would happen if u put a (great white) shark in fresh water and an alligator in salt water?

They'd die if you put them in the wrong type of water (not straight away, but they'd deteriorate fairly quickly). Their bodies have adapted over thousands/millions of years to the concentration of salt in the water (vice versa for fresh water species). There are certain creatures that can live in both though.
